Roskilde municipality, 107 servers went down for counting: The municipality lost 82,000 public documents

Saturday 2 June 2018

The error should have occurred in a storage rig provided by Hitachi.

Two errors in two minutes

First the main desk went down. So two minutes later, the backup solution went down with the same mistake, KMD states in a document that the Danish online newspaper has accessed.

– It all resulted in 107 servers going down for counting. Three of these belonged to the municipality of Roskilde, named in the document. It was only the Danish municipality that lost data in the incident.

Error in code line

The data loss affected 16 325 inhabitants. 10 179 of these had active cases with the municipality, where the case papers were lost.

According to KMD, there should be an error in a code line that made sure that the backup did not work properly.

The reason why this has not been discovered is that the code error, which has been found retrospectively, has made it seem as if the systems worked as they should, is stated in the statement.

This code error thus made sure that no backup of the data has been produced and they are lost forever, writes Version2.
